Blog 2: Roy Blunt Ad

Roy Blunt Ad

I will first start with the ascetics of this commercial.  A common tactic used in comparison advertisements is the use of music.  The candidate that is being portrayed positively is normally accompanied by music in a major key.  When the comparison is made with the other candidate, music is normally in a minor key.  These sound ascetics have been inscribed in us since we are little kids in movies and television.

While the intended audience is not clear, the intention of the ad is very clear.  Roy Blunt is trying to portray himself as a part of the community and a down to earth person.  By starting the ad with “who’s Robin Carnahan kidding?” it is clear that this ad is a response to a previous Carnahan spot.  The main message of ad is to compare Carnahan directly to Blunt and show the public why they should vote for Blunt.  The message becomes more effective with the input of Barack Obama in the commercial.

Overall, I think that this ad would get overlooked in the short term but may have be effective if repeated on television for a long period of time, primarily to get Blunt’s name out.

I agree with you on the music factor. Music is huge when it comes to advertisements and I feel like many people overlook that.
