BLOG 4: Journalists’ Duties

“In wartime, truth is so precious that she should always be attended by a bodyguard of lies.” – Winston Churchill

As difficult as wartime or a major crisis is, it’s a journalists job to challenge and analyze what is going on during and after. The September 11 terrorists attacks were a rude awakening that America was not invincible. People were filled with extreme patriotism. Unfortunately, this attitude affected the media’s ability to be objective. It is easy to get sucked into the emotion, as Dan Rather demonstrated, but America deserves the truth. Sometimes the truth is not something that is pleasant, but it’s important that American citizens hear it. If journalists claim to be unbiased, truth-seeking, and reliable they need to hold themselves to that standard. Challenging the president and military leaders allows Americans to hold them accountable. Who will if the voices of America won’t? Journalists are the watchdogs of the people, even when it is difficult to be objective and honest.
