Blog 9: To Ligit to Quit?

Does the media do a sufficient job in informing citizens and giving enough information to make educated decisions on which candidate to vote for? Thanks in part to Comedy Central, Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert are taking measures to make this happen. These shows provide news in a way that makes citizens want to watch. They do a good job on entertaining the population while informing at the same time via soft news. This goes back to the Oprah Effect we discussed in class. Just because people are getting their news sources from daytime television does not mean that isn’t an effective way to learn about what is going on in the political world. Once people hear about the main topics and the basic understanding of what that story’s content is, they will be more interested in what is going on and can learn more about those stories from hard news sources.

Granted, higher politically aware individuals will not get much information out of soft news because they are more likely to be more avid watchers of harder news sources, but that does not mean they don’t enjoy the occasional Jon Stewart and Colbert Report.
