Hard News or Entertainment…?

Whether or not Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert host legitimate political news television programs varies with different definitions of political news.  For some, just hearing the story with out much substance, such as the way Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert depict political news, is good enough to call it reasonable and “newsworthy.” For others, they just view the Daily Show and The Colbert Report as regular late night television shows.  Although, I would say that most viewers’ reasoning for watching one or both of these shows is for the entertainment factor rather than just strictly political news.

The Colbert Report mocks conservative personality driven political pundit programs exceptionally Fox News and The O’Reilly Factor.  The Daily show is a self-proclaimed fake news program.  The Daily Show draws its comedy and burlesque from recent news stories, media organizations, and political figures.  Each episode concludes with a celebrity interview, with guests ranging from musicians to actors to political figures.  Just recently, Jon Stewart hosted an entire episode to President Barak Obama.

The Daily Show has responded numerous times to criticisms by saying that they do now have a journalistic responsibility or accountability and that the purpose of the show is to provide entertainment.  With the jokes of both the Daily Show with John Stewart and The Colbert Report being conservative talk shows and hard-core conservative extremists.  Both Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert, hosts of their respective programs, certainly promote political participation.  They are always encouraging people to exercise their franchisement and vote.  Just this past weekend, they hosted a rally on the National Mall in Washington D.C.  While the main focus wasn’t to get voters or to change the minds of voters, they at least wanted people to get out and vote!

You can take the word of Jon Stewart and Stephen Colbert of calling themselves fake newscasts, or you can ignore that fact and take their comedy political news parades as they are.  Just by watching their programs you will learn current events and what is going on in the world of politics.  While the news may have some misleading facts and different twists, the headlines you see on The Daily Show and The Colbert Report will be the same headlines you see on CNN’s Situation Room with Wolf Blitzer.
