Blog 8: Colbert and Stewart

To start, I do not watch either the “Colbert Report” or the “Daily Show” on a regular basis. In fact, I do not think I have ever even watched a full episode, just random clips here and there. So, in order to gain an opinion on these shows, I went to youtube and watched a few clips. These clips made me wonder-are Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart mainly actors/comedians, or are they educated journalists? If I had to guess, I would say they are comedians.  In my Communication 3050 class, we learned that Stewart and Colbert were one of the most popular ways that college aged students get their daily political news. I can understand why this would be true. Stewart and Colbert seem to put a funny spin on topics, and make the topic of politics lighter.

In the video clip I came across of Colbert, he is discussing wikipedia and its legitimacy. It is obvious that his audience and viewers find him very funny, as you can hear people laughing in the background. Colbert seems to be very loud and in your face.

Next, I viewed a clip of the Daily Show with Jon Stewart. In this clip, Bill O’Reilly of Fox News is the guest. Stewart is interviewing him about his “fear” of governance with Barack Obama, and federal government in general. Again, it seems as if the audience is entertained, and they are laughing.

I believe that these shows are political news to an extent. They provide their audience with entertainment, while also talking about relevant political topics, with political figures. Of course, these shows are biased, just like everything else. These shows promote political participation, because their audiences are mainly younger, college-aged students. More younger people voted in the 2008 election than ever before, and I think that it has something to do with these satiric political shows, that are aimed at a younger audience.

Why do you think these shows promote political participation among youth? What is it about the shows that motivate young citizens?
