Blog 2: Information needs of a community

The most important information need I could see for a community would be knowledge on how to access the basic goods that said community offers. Across the board this is essential regardless of the community you reside in. Society functions in the manner it does due in large part to administrative and bureaucratic functions of government.

Even if government does not directly provides certain services can’t negate the fact that many of these non-government provided services are still promoted through local government sources. Examples include gaining access to essential needs like water, sewer, trash, and electric services. There are also contact for services such as US mail, cable/internet, and many additional services provided to the community. With out such access to basic goods, it would become much more difficult for individuals in a community to advance their own growth, and in return, prevent the community as a whole to further grow.

The city of Columbia is a great example of this, and while it is possible to attain the information one might need, the city’s website is a great way to take advantage of all said services. Imagine if such a government function did not exist. One might find a private entity in some cases willing to gather and disseminate such information, but arguably not to the same extent as a government would be able to.

Aside from the more obvious services a community can receive, such sites such as public transit, food pantries, public health, and community events. All of these help to enhance the quality of life within the community and encourage a sense of social responsibility.

    Good. But do you think this is an ongoing, constant need? After you are established in a community and know how to access your services, do you consistently need access to this information? And is this information you only access when you have a specific need?
