BLOG 5: College Students and High Textbook Prices

  1. This article is about the increasing prices of textbooks and how it is causing some students to forego buying the books even though it could jeopardize their grades. I chose this article because I think it relates to all college students because textbooks have been increasing in price since I began college. It is hard for students to pay for such expensive books since tuition, room and board, etc. are already extremely expensive.
  2. The research in this article was taken from a survey from 2000 students from 33 states and 156 different campuses from the U.S. Public Interest Research Group. They concluded that students spend an average of $1200 each year on textbooks. That is 39% of tuition at a community college and 14% of tuition at a four-year public college.
  3. My question from this research article regards the amount of people taken for the study. 2000 students total from 256 different colleges means only around 7/8 students from each school were selected and that doesn’t seem like a big enough sample size and I wonder why there weren’t more? Also, how did they selected those few students from each school?
